Coloma, California

Old Schoolroom

About 170 years ago, gold was found in Coloma, California, starting the California gold rush. Once a boom town, today Coloma has a population of only a few hundred people, and is primarily a tourist attraction.

Betty Sederquist, a former resident of the area, conducts photo workshops in Coloma, California. She arranges for a Park Ranger to open usually-locked buildings for visitor photography. During this full-day (9:00 am to 5:00 pm) adventure, there are many unique opportunities to photograph very old artifacts from the California Gold Rush times.

Coloma is located on the South Fork of the American River. From Auburn, take Route 49 south. The total distance from SCLH is about 32 miles, and travel time is less than one hour.
