April 12th General Meeting Featured a Double Header

Photolemur Presentation by Jim Moon and Club's First Open Forum Discussion

The Photolemur presentation by Jim Moon was a hit with members attending the April General Meeting.  “Photo Enhancement on Autopilot” is how the developers of Photolemur term this easy to use program that gives great results in a matter of seconds.

Jim uploaded 20 photos into Photolemur in a matter of about two minutes and reviewed the remarkable improvements the program made automatically to the pictures. These pictures covered a wide range of interests - landscapes, portraits, flowers, etc., in order to give members a good review of the capabilities of Photolemur.  Jim also included a picture provided by one of the members - a polaroid shot that was many years old and yellowed with age.  Although this was quite a challenge to the ability of Potolemur, it was somewhat improved.

Here's a screen shot showing functionality Photolemur

The process was developed by using almost a million pictures shot by people worldwide and analyzed by experts to determine what steps photographers took to improve their original images.  This huge body of data was used to develop algorithms that provide the means to improve pictures in one easy step. This remarkable program, now available for both Mac and Windows, is the first automated photo enhancement solution using image recognition, artificial intelligence, and a little bit of real-world magic. It is currently available on a subscription basis from photolemur.comThe first year is 64% off the normal price for a total of $35.88.

For those of you who like to spend hours “tinkering” with one photo to get that absolutely perfect final product, this may not be the program for you.  “Why?” you ask.  Because the program is virtually automatic with no buttons to select, sliders to slide, choices to make. Those of us who are “obsessive/compulsive” will probably hyperventilate trying to find something to “move” to make the picture better.  But the program does it all for you without your “help”.

Our members who are intimidated by Photoshop, Photoshop Elements and even Photos (on the Mac) will find this program an essential, if not the only, tool needed in their efforts to improve a photo.  Even those who have been doing this for years will find the program an instant help in deciding whether a photo is “worth fussing with” or throwing away with just an instant journey through the Photolemur app.

April Meeting also featured a lively "Open Forum"

The last item of business for the April General Meeting was an open discussion on several different topics all designed to set up a framework for accumulating information from the membership that would allow the Board to gain insight into what was working and what was not along with suggestions on what can be done differently/better to enhance the club experience.

For those of you who were unable to attend, the topics included: the Focus of the Club; Relevance of SIGs; How to Use Accumulating Club Funds; Inclusion of Photo Competitions Or Judging; Types of Speakers at the General Meeting; Number of Social Events; Establishing Mentoring Programs (camera use, printing, photo enhancing programs); Exhibits of Member’s Prints; Christmas Party Structure; Website (what do you need, don't need, what is most useful?); Swap/Sale Event for Equipment; and Field Trips.

The result was a rousing discussion and a wonderfully positive exchange of ideas to enhance our club. These ideas will be consolidated into a list of suggestions and a report will be issued within the next month or so that provides a synopsis of the suggestions and will be published on the website.  From there, the Board will look to implementing as many of the suggestions as reasonable with participation from membership in that implementation.
