The Chi of Smoke... was the topic of February 8th General Meeting Presentation by critically acclaimed photographer, Jerry Berry.

Creating Images Reflective of Asian Brush Paintings

“Smoke is something that photographers have used for years.   It can be sensuous or stark; subtle or dramatic.   I have started exploring the use of smoke, and with the help of Photoshop and Lightroom, have been creating a variety of images, reflective of Asian brush paintings,” stated Jerry Berry, award winning photographer.

At the February 8th General Meeting, Berry described how he captures photos of smoke and will demonstrate his process of creating very different images, evoking ethereal landscapes or portraits.

“Using simple techniques in post processing, I show how layers and masks can dramatically enhance these photos.  Learning to use layer and masking techniques can open up tremendous potential for all photographers,” continued Berry.

His images of smoke are striking, filled with subtle movement, grace and sense of mystery   Photographers of all abilities were captivated by Berry’s photographic mastery and creativity as well as his knowledge of post processing software.

Largely self-taught, Berry’s photographs have won awards at the California State Fair and have been honored in competitions and galleries in the United States.  In 2012, he was invited to participate in the Second International Show of Photography in Iraq, produced by the Larsa Human Rights Organization.

More recently, he received Honorable Mention in the 2013 Photography contest held by the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum in Santa Fe New, Mexico.   He is currently preparing his smoke images for an upcoming exhibit at the Viewpoint Gallery in Sacramento during June.
