Yolo Bypass Wildlife Area

During our frequent travels to San Francisco and the Bay Area, we passed the Yolo Bypass Wildlife Area many times without paying attention to anything except heavy traffic and the chronic rebuilding of Route 80 in this area.

On November 4th, we joined the Bird Group for an outing to this wildlife refuge, also called the Vic Fazio Yolo Wildlife Area. Paul MacGarvey, our Bird-Group lead, handed out walkie-talkies for each car and directed our attention to many species we wouldn’t have normally noticed. During the 3-hour loop around harvested rice fields and wetlands, we saw dozens of varieties of waterfowl, migratory birds, and raptors.

Directions

About 40 miles from our community, this wildlife area can be reached in an hour. We went past the casino, down 99 to Rt. 80 and at the end of the Yolo Causeway, exited Chiles Road. Turn right at stop sign and proceed south under freeway to west levee access.
