Manzanar

On Highway 395, between Independence and Lone Pine, the Japanese-American relocation center offers unique photographic opportunities. One of ten camps constructed after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, December 7, 1941, the Manzanar camp housed more than 10,000 Americans of Japanese ancestry.

Located between the Sierra Nevada mountains to the west and the Inyo mountains to the east, it’s an easy, and rewarding stop.

Ansel Adams, Clem Albers, Dorothea Lange and Francis Stewart photographed the location long ago.
