Yosemite National Park

Night Sky - Olmstead Point

Olmstead Point was an excellent place to photograph the Milky Way and Galaxy Center. It was dark, and a soft glow from distant cities provided a nice accent. At 5:30 p.m., we started the quarter mile trek to a flat granite slab with a clear view to the western horizon. At 8:30 p.m., it had become dark enough to start, and the galaxy center was clearly visible.

Our leaders provided vital information for this October, 2015 Field Trip: Where the galaxy center would be, how to work in the dark (use red lights), how to focus in the dark, the best ISO and shutter speed.

Firefall - Horsetail Falls, February Sunset

Every year in February, Yosemite’s Horsetail Falls is illuminated for a few minutes by the setting sun, and appears like a liquid firefall. The Lincoln Hills Phototography Club was lucky in 2016. The conditions were just right -- a combination of sufficient water, clear skies to the west, and the right temperatures. And we were there!

Thanks to careful planning by Les Thomas, we arrived at the right time and the right place. The following PDF files have more details.

Yosemite Valley, February 2016

An attraction to visit Yosemite in February is the Firefall. However, many other photographic opportunities presented themselves during our February 15-19 Field Trip. Attached are planning materials, which describe interesting locations, and suggestions about the best time of day for good lighting.
