Aviation Photography - Growing the Passion!

Who doesn’t look up when they hear the sound of a plane? There is something about flight that grabs our imagination. Aviation photography is the most adrenaline rich, action packed thrill ride to ever expose a pixel! That’s why it's the fastest growing genre of photography, and for good reason. The speed, sounds, and smells are intoxicating and when combined with that image in your camera, you get hooked! And here begins the challenge of sharing this experience in your photographs with others.

'Moose' Peterson

Moose’s passion for visual storytelling evolved into a business in 1981. His wife Sharon has been there from the start and together they have dedicated their lives to educating the public for the protection of our wild heritage through his photography. In 2008 Moose’s passion for aviation took flight retaining the same goals of preserving our aviation heritage and the freedoms they protect, pictorially and orally for future generations. Along the way Moose has been honored for his photographic passion: he is a Nikon Ambassador USA, recipient of the John Muir Conservation Award, Research Associate with the Endangered Species Recovery Program, just to name a few. He was part of Epson’s Finish Strong ad campaign. Moose was the creative producer/photographer of his acclaimed film: Warbirds and The Men Who Flew Them. He shares his knowledge through his writing, being published in over 143 magazines worldwide, author of 29 books including his latest, Takeoff and best seller Captured. One of the original Nikon shooters to receive the D1 in 1999, Moose embraced this new technology, becoming the only wildlife photographer in the world to shoot strictly digital in the early years.

Smartphone Photography Class

Have you ever stumbled onto that special 'Kodak Moment' but your camera was at home? A group of about 20 members are determined to learn how to master the camera in our smartphone. We have enrolled in the iPhone or Samsung Photography Academy to learn smartphone camera controls and settings, camera apps, understanding camera modes, photography techniques and so much more!. The program has four modules, each having several videos and assignments. We meet every other week through conclusion.  Check out our smartphone photos at the General Meeting's 'Gimme Five' and Show and Tells! If you missed out on the class, you can still take the online course found at http://iphonephoyographyschool.com.

April Photography SIG Meeting
"Part 2 - Mastering Flower Photography – With Your Smartphone"
Emphasis on Composition and Editing

A follow-on to the March 6 SIG on "Wildflowers with Your Smartphone"

April 3, 2024 - SIG (Special Interest Group) Learning Session - OC Multipurpose Room - 9:00AM

Why: In our March 6 SIG, Mastering Flower Photography with Your Smartphone, we presented 12 tips for great flower photography.  We discussed that the real key to learning is to practice and experiment by taking photos with your Smartphone.

Follow up to the SIG:  We found we just "scratched the surface" in mastering flower photography with our smartphones.  Each participant was encouraged to be active in taking flower photos with their Smartphone and to consider the 12 tips included in the March 6th SIG handout and other tips shared.  This SIG will focus on the importance of composition and in-smartphone editing or computer editing.

Standing Room Only - Not enough space - Solution.  The March 6 SIG was the largest number of members ever to attend a SIG. Unfortunately, we ran out of room for everyone.  Five people left and others had to stand along the sides and back of the room.  For the April 3 SIG, we have requested the room to be set with 36 chairs in a theater-style setup.  How does this impact you?

Media From WIX

Seats will be reserved for members who submit a flower photo taken with their smartphone.

We are going to try something new.  That usually means that people who like challenges and some fun will like it, and people who don’t like change will not.

Guarantee your spot in this SIG =  Submit one or two flower photos taken with your smartphone.   Not more than 2 photos, just submit 1 or 2 (two) photos.

Lessons Learned.  This will be a Show & Tell of photos where certain participants can discuss their approach to taking photos on their smartphones and how any of the 12 Tips from the handout in the March 6 class were helpful. We learn from each other by sharing. We may also show a Flower Photography Video from the iPhone Photo Academy.

Attendance at this SIG will initially be reserved for participants when they submit their one or two photos.   Until the room capacity is full.  Once the limit of chairs the Association will allow to be set up is reached, no additional participants will be allowed.  Yep, the classic “You Snooze, You Lose” concept.

Submit your 1 or 2  flower photos in jpg format (large) by email to Les Thomas: 7thomas33@gmail.com.

The sooner you submit your photos, the better your chance of getting a secured place in the room. Once we reach the maximum number allowed, we will announce that the room is full and no further participants will be included.

This SIG is open to all photo club members, just submit 1 or 2 photos to reserve your space.

Handouts will be available at the SIG including the 12 Tips noted below.

If you want to start the journey of mastering your iPhone or Android-based (Samsung, Moto, Pixel, etc.) smartphone for photography, this is the opportunity.  We found in the first class that we are all beginners!

Best to you,  Les Thomas  7thomas33@gmail.com

Photography Club Field Trip – Another Great Adventure!

Monterey, Carmel, Pacific Grove,  Asilomar, 17 Mile Drive and Big Sur areas

April 23, 24, 25, returning home on April 26

Club member Images from past trips

Book your reservations early to get great rates and no-cost cancellations if your plans change.

Dates:  We recommend booking reservations now for April 2024 with check-in starting on Tuesday, April 23, including 24 and 25, with check-out on Friday, April 26.  Some people are extending their reservations to spend more time in the area.

Asilomar Hotel and Conference Grounds in the Asilomar State Park and Beach.

For this trip, we are planning to make the Asilomar State Park Conference Center in Pacific Grove our central location.  This historical “minimalist” state park facility is designed to encourage visitors to spend time outdoors or in group conferences.  It is adjacent to the state beach, providing easy walks for sunrise or sunset times on the beach.

Having a central location will enable group meetups in the evenings at a fire pit or the beach for sunset, meetups for meals including a lunch at the Pebble Beach Golf Course, and classes for tips on great locations and times for photography opportunities.  This also enables our participants to join together for day trips or meals in small groups if desired.

Asilomar has great rates for those who book early, starting at ~ $170/night, a bargain for this area, and if you reserve your room via the promotion code for seniors, you can cancel anytime up to 72 hours in advance and get your deposit back. Reservations require paying the first night as a deposit, and the remainder is due upon check-in.

Many conferences are held at this prime location, and rooms will quickly fill up so we encourage you to make a decision early to guarantee availability.  We already know of a very large group of photographers from Chicago who are planning a conference at the same time.

We urge you to make your plans and reservations now!  It is a classic, “You snooze, you lose” situation.

Note: You may book reservations at any hotel; you are not required to stay at Asilomar.

Wherever you want to stay, we still encourage you to book reservations as soon as possible before availability tightens and rates spike.

Trip Packs, Pre-trip Planning Meetings, and “Show & Tell” Gathering post-trip.

For this trip, we will have a complete, detailed Trip Pack available, a pre-trip planning meeting so you can make the best use of your time on the trip, and a separate “Show & Tell” gathering after the trip.  Because many members/guests will be going on this trip, these materials and gatherings will be limited to those who make a reservation for lodging.

Planners for this trip include Jim Sakaguchi, Truman Holtzclaw and Les Thomas.  Input from others is encouraged.  Contact any of us if you have any questions.

After you have booked your hotel reservation, send an email to Les Thomas, 7thomas33@gmail.com and we’ll add your name(s) to the participant list.

SCLH Photography Club Facebook Page

This is a place for SCLH Photography Members to have a conversation about photography, cameras, and places to shoot photography in the area. You can ask a specific "how to" or "where can I find..." or "how can I improve this shot?" or "thinking of going to.....does anyone want to come too?" You can post great photography-related websites that others might like. Use your creativity.  The SCLH Photography Club Facebook page is accessible to all residents of Sun City Lincoln Hills.

There are a few rules.

  1. No politics, none, nada.

  2. The only things you can sell on this page are photography equipment that is usually sold within the club like reselling cameras, printers, etc. Nothing else. Nothing.

  3. Constructive criticism only when critiquing. (Don't tell us that it was a stupid, boring shot, We'll figure it out anyway.)

  4. If you are selling your photography, protect your copyright. You may not want that one up on the Internet on Facebook. Post a link to your photography website instead.
