Story by Vicki White

Our featured speaker for the July 13 General meeting, is Laurie Freedman.

She has been doing photography for over 25 years, and loves it.  Friedman started her photography business, Friedman Fotography, in Davis in 2001, with the idea of providing more affordable, quality photography for weddings and other events.  She does family and individual portraits, too.   Her website is http://www.friedmanfotography.com.

She won the Grand Prize in a Budget Travel magazine photography contest, and is past-President of the Photo Club of Davis. She loves to travel where she does photography as well.

She will be presenting a program on a trip she took to Ireland.  She states that it must be genetic, as her father loved to travel and had an artistic eye, and she is addicted to traveling as well as photography, and has visited over 65 countries—so far.

She is a member of the Sierra Camera Club, was the Travel Director for four years, and has won a fair number of Club ribbons as well as the Grand Prize award from a Budget Travel magazine photo contest.

Story by Vicki White

Jim Klein was the featured speaker.  The title of his presentation was:  Better Composition Using Gestalt Principles.  He focused on Gestalt theory which is important to Photography.  He stressed that the human brain perceives things as a unified scene to convey a message, and this is how we want to make our photographs.

Composition is what we use within the frame to tell a story.  Gestalt is German for shape or form.  When we see a tree, we see a tree - our first perception is of a whole tree.  This is hard-wired into our brain.  It is a way to quickly understand our world.  We like structure and shape in our world.  The brain uses Gestalt to quickly understand what we are seeing.

The law of closure forces the viewer to complete the picture even though parts of it can be, or are, often missing.  This is the way to involve the viewer.  Triangles and circles, real or implied, make the picture more interesting.  Jim went on to explain the following Gestalt “laws”:

  • Law of Symmetry

  • Law of Similarity - brain uses it to form a picture.

  • Law of Proximity

  • Law of Continuity

  • Law of our brain wants to see a leading path

  • Law of Common Fate

  • Law of Figure Ground Articulation

  • Law of Emergence

A full explanation along with examples can be found at:  http://www.adorama.com/alc/0013706/article/6-Principles-of-Gestalt-Psychology-That-Can-Improve-Your-Photography

He cautioned everyone to compose an image considering everything. The brain does things automatically so take advantage of that in your compositions.

Good composition is essential to creating superior photographs.  Many rules for composition we already seem to know, though if we were asked to say what they were, we may have a hard time articulating them.  This is where the principles of Gestalt can provide some insights.

In 1910, a German psychologist had an insight when he observed a series of lights flashing on and off at a railroad crossing. It was similar to how the lights encircling a movie theater marquee flash on and off.  To the observer, it appeared as if a single light moves around the marquee, traveling from bulb to bulb, when in reality it’s a series of bulbs turning on and off and the lights don’t move it all.

This insight led to a group of psychologists to study how we look at the world, and what rules our brain follows in perceiving the world; the “rules” of visual perception are ones we intuitively use each time we snap a picture.  Gestalt Theory relies primarily on the idea people observe the world “holistically,” that is, we make sense of what we see by automatically reducing the image to simple figures or relationships among the elements.  A set of rules were developed by these psychologists to explain how the brain does this.  These are the rules we can learn to create better compositions for our photographs.

In this presentation, Jim will go through these simple rules and show how they are used in photographs, many of which are from photographs of master photographers.  You may not become one of these “master photographers” after learning about Gestalt theory, but you should edge a little closer.
