January General Meeting Featured a presentation from Action Camera on Mirrorless Cameras

Rebecca Cody, Sales Associate at Action Camera, presented a comparison between mirrorless and DSLR cameras.

DSLRs have been around a very long time. A mirror reflects light up to a prism and into the viewfinder. When the shutter button is pressed, the mirror flips up, the shutter opens and the image sensor captures the image.

A mirrorless camera has a simpler light path. After the light passes through the lens, it falls on the image sensor, which captures a preview of the image. Pressing the shutter button captures the image. The mirrorless camera body can be of simpler construction and smaller.

Rebecca favored Sony mirrorless cameras as having the most advanced features, the most important being stabilization, focus ability, and usability. She regarded the most serious disadvantage as battery life, although with recent models, this has been improved.
