Photolemur For Windows Big Disappointment

After Jim Moon's great presentation of Photolemur at the Photo Enhancement SIG I decided to pre-order the Windows version. It became available yesterday and I downloaded and installed it on my PC. My first impression was it is a big disappointment.

First, while Photolemur is not a feature rich program to begin with which I knew, the Windows version is even more bare bones. Basically you import your photos and export them to the Photolemur enhanced version. You can choose where to export them to and choose from four different formats in which to save them. Jpeg, Tiff, PNG, and PDF are the options. You can double click on a photo while it is in the Photolemur window and it will process the photo giving you a photo with the slider that shows the before and after version. If you left click on a photo you get a menu with two options. Export and Delete are your choices. That's it. The slider in the MAC version that changes how the final photo looks is missing in the Windows version. There is also no slideshow like arrangement of your photos at the bottom like in the MAC version. Instead they are arranged in rows at the top of the window. While the User Interface in the MAC version is skimpy it is all but non-existent in the Windows version. Hopefully the UI in the Windows version will improve over time.

Second problem is Photolemur does not properly handle Canon RAW (.CR2) files. It only produces an enhanced black and white photo even though the original RAW file is a color photo. If you process the Jpeg version it will produce an enhanced color version as you would expect.

Finally Photolemur is being sold as a subscription which basically means that the program will work for one year and then most likely will stop working if you do not renew your subscription. This was not clear to me when I first signed up. Right now you can purchase it for $36/yr. However after 1000 subscriptions are sold at that price it goes up to $48/yr for the next 2000 and then finally to it's full price of $72/yr. At this time it is unknown what it will cost to renew your subscription.

I have sent several questions to Photolemur using their websites contact feature. We will see how well they respond to their customers.

If you purchased the Windows version please leave a comment below letting me and others know what you think. I'm especially curious to hear from users of other camera brands to see if Photolemur properly handles your camera's RAW files.

UPDATE April 28, 2017

At the Round Table SIG meeting there was some discussion of Photolemur. According to those who have the MAC version the latest update makes it the same as the Windows version. Gone are the additional tools that were in the original version demonstrated by Jim Moon.
