January General Meeting Featured a presentation from Action Camera on Mirrorless Cameras

Truman Holtzclaw turns over the microphone to Action Camera's Rebecca Cody

Rebecca Cody, Sales Associate at Action Camera, presented a comparison between mirrorless and DSLR cameras.

DSLRs have been around a very long time. A mirror reflects light up to a prism and into the viewfinder. When the shutter button is pressed, the mirror flips up, the shutter opens and the image sensor captures the image.

A mirrorless camera has a simpler light path. After the light passes through the lens, it falls on the image sensor, which captures a preview of the image. Pressing the shutter button captures the image. The mirrorless camera body can be of simpler construction and smaller.

Rebecca favored Sony mirrorless cameras as having the most advanced features, the most important being stabilization, focus ability, and usability. She regarded the most serious disadvantage as battery life, although with recent models, this has been improved.

During the presentation, Jeff Hanner recorded a video and you can find it in our video archive by clicking  HERE

Photo Club’s Holiday Party -- December 13th!!

Just like last year, the Party was held in the Sportsman’s Bar at Meridians.

Dale Petersen prepares for the Holiday Breakfast

Holiday Breakfast tickets went on sale at the November General Meeting. Seventy tickets were sold.

Tickets were $10.00 per person which included breakfast, coffee and orange juice as well as tax and tip. The breakfast buffet and started at 8:00 am.

As always, the event was a sell-out. The main diffence this year was the absence of the time-intensive raffle. Responding to members' suggestions, the event was a relaxed social affair. Everyone had ample time to walk around and share holiday wishes with friends and exchange holiday photo ideas.

The party pictures from Truman are   HERE

We have a few volunteers for Website Chairpersons for our LHPC Website

This January Bob Baikauskas, who has served as Webmaster for the Club website, retired his duties so he can once again focus on photography.

Our website is built using WIX, a website development platform that uses an easy drag and drop editor, so there’s no coding experience needed.

We have a great website content team providing great input for the NEWS, GALLERY, RESOURCE, SIGs and BLOG features.

By having several people serving as Website Chairpersons, focusing on website structure, the time requirement for each person should be only a few hours each month.

Next Enhancement SIG Meeting - Wednesday February 7th 2018

Enhancement SIG Image Processing/Interpretive Challenge

will resume in March 2018.

Image Processed by Truman Holtzclaw

The next meeting of the Photo Enhancement SIG will be open discussion. There have been some updates to a couple of photo editing programs we can discuss. If you are new to photo editing and have questions this would be a good meeting to attend. It would also be a good meeting to attend if you have a photo that you would like help editing. Bring it on a flash drive and our resident experts will help.

As always you can bring some photos on a flash drive and present them to the group. If so be sure and include the before version of the photo. We can also talk about any new gear we got for Christmas.

I hope to see you there.

Field Trip in February to Visit Yosemite's Beautiful Winter Scenics

Scheduled for February 20, 21 and 22, 2018

Bill Kress' Image from the February, 2016 Yosemite Field Trip

We did this trip in 2016 with fantastic results.  Yosemite is always a magical place and winters can be the best for photography and avoiding the   massive crowds of summer.

One of our destinations is the natural Firefall phenomena that illuminates Yosemite’s Horsetail Falls every February. In addition to this spectacular event, The National Park is rich with photo opportunities ranging from well known locations like El Capitan and Half Dome to lesser known landmarks.

We even know the 14 secret locations touted by highly paid guides!

We have 17 people signed up so far, from the announcement emailed to all members on December 12.

Note that Lodging is a key for this trip.  Book early and save.

You must have lodging booked to be included in the Pre-Trip Orientation Meeting and to receive a Trip Pack.

The First Session Will be January 16, 2018 in the Multipurpose Room at 9:00 a.m.

The Board has approved incorporating a Learning Initiative into Club activities. Learning will be enhanced in current SIGs, General Membership Meetings, field trips and Flash Mobs.

A Learning Initiave Steering Committee has been established to guide the Initiative and identify learning opportunities. Steering Group members will propose program agendas, help find subject experts, assist in coordinating ‘learning’ field trips, etc. The Steering Group presents its recommendations to the Board.

Rather than targeting an equipment group, ie: point and shoot cameras, the Learning Initiative will be structured by topic and technique which should benefit each equipment group at least some of the time. Topic examples may include street photography, vacation photography and night photography; while technique examples include composition, ISO, shutter speed, selective focus, etc.

The latest blog post is on backing up your photos

We all know we should backup our photos but how many of us do and more importantly are we doing it properly? The latest blog post gives my opinions and that of experts on backing up photos as well as other important files and presents links to articles that deal with the subject of backups. It will discuss backup software some which is free and some you have to pay for. It will also list cloud based solutions for backing up your photos and other important files.

You may think you are doing everything right when it comes to backups but are you? Check out this blog post and then you can make an informed decision on whether to keep doing it the way you are doing it or switch to a different and hopefully better way.

We were hoping members would get involved and express there opinions.  In fact we encourage you to do so.

If you have any experience with, or opinions about, any of the information presented in the blog posts please share your thoughts with your fellow Club members. Post a comment. I would prefer the Blog be a conversation and not a lecture.

Have a post idea... Let us know.
