Eastern Sierra Fall Colors and a mid-October Super-Moon
to be focus of Field Trip slated for October 14th to 19th.

The California Highway 395 Corridor on the Eastern Sierra from Mono Lake to the Alabama Hills will be the focus of the Club’s annual Fall Color Field trip scheduled to take place from October 14th to the 19th.

The Eastern Sierra is California's showcase for Fall Colors and provids photographers with great opportunities to capture beautiful images of yellow, gold, and orange aspens against a backdrop of spectacular mountain peaks, streams and lakes.

In addition to the Fall Colors, the trip is also being scheduled to take advantage of a “Super Moon” that will reach its maximum fullness on the evening of October 15th at precisely 9:23 pm.

Super Moon

Wikipedia defines Super Moon as “the coincidence of a full moon or a new moon with the closest approach the Moon makes to the Earth on its elliptical orbit, resulting in the largest apparent size of the lunar disk as seen from Earth.” It’s BIG and bright folks.

The website, Space.com, has a dramatic graphical presentation that illustrates just how much larger the Super Moon can be.

Check it our here:

http://www.space.com/11161-supermoon-full-moon-science-infographic.html

Those making the trip will have a variety of opportunities to photograph the moon as it rises and sets over some of the more iconic landscapes that abound on the "Other Side of California".

These opportunities include:

  • Moonrise over Mono Lake on the evening of October 14th.

  • Moonset over the Sierra Crest from a variety of locations near Bishop CA, and the Alabama Hills near Lone Pine, CA on the morning of October 16th.

With the Moon being at its maximum brightness during the trip, the group will also have an opportunity to try their hand at photographing under Moonlight in the Alabama Hills on the nights of October 16th and 17th.

Milky Way Galaxy

As a bonus, the group wil also have an opportunity to photograph the Milky Way Galaxy over the Alabama Hills and the Sierra Crest on the night of October 17th.  The Galaxy will be visible for approximately 97-minutes from 7:40pm to 9:16pm.

The Galaxy photograph may be possible because the Galactic Core (brightest part of the Galaxy) will be in the Southwest while the Moon will be rising in the Northeast. To Photograph the Galaxy, the camera will actually be pointing away from the Moon toward the darker portion of the sky.

A Menue Approach

Trip participants enjoyed a pre-trip planning party at the home of Field Trip coordinator Les Thomas on Thursday, September 8th.  A Field Trip planning and information package was distributed to help trip goers prepare for the trip.

The trip itinerary and info package identified specific times and locations for two primary celestial photographic opportunities i.e., Moonrise over Mono Lake on 10/14, and the Moonset over the  Sierra Crest on 10/16.

The package also included information to help participants prepare to take photographs at night under the light of the Super Moon.

Detailed location maps were also included to enable participants to set their own time table based upon their interest.

The package includes information for the primary locations for photographing Fall Color such as Convict Lake, Rock Creek Canyon, Lake Sabrina, and South Lake Road among others.

The Above photo Moonrset over Lone Pine Mt. and Mt. Whitney

The Above photo Fall Colors - Intake II

The Alabama Hills is also a photographic wonderland with unusual rock formations and dozens of photogenic arches, the most popular of which is the Mobius Arch also know as the Swan.  This area will serve as the subject for the Moonlight Photography activity on the nights of 10/16 and 10/17.

The BLOG is Here!!! Check it Out.

A new feature has been added to the club's website. It's a blog.

The new blog will replace the old bulletins that were published infrequently. The new blog posts will be shorter, more timely, usually cover only one topic and while there won't be daily posts they will be much more frequent. They will also be used for timely club announcements.

Perhaps the best thing is you will have the ability to comment on blog posts and respond to someone elses comments. You will even be able to put a photo in your comment.

The first blog post is already on the website. It provides more detailed information about how the blog will operate and how to post comments. The second blog post will appear Monday August 1st. More are already in the que and others are in the works so check frequently.

To navigate to the new blog look for the BLOG link at the end of the main menu, or click   HERE

We hope you will enjoy this new feature and participate by commenting on blog posts, responding to the comments of others, and asking questions.

Opening Doors is Hosting Their Annual Festival of Flavors and Needs Art Donations For Their Silent Auction

The Sun City Lincoln Hills Community Association was contacted by Opening Doors, a 501c3 nonprofit whose mission is to empower human trafficking survivors, immigrants, refugees, and underserved area residents to achieve self-sufficiency by accessing opportunities to economic and social systems.

They support the region’s most vulnerable residents by providing safe places, skills development, business loans, and connections to community resources, assisting their clients to build financial and personal assets while maintaining their cultural identity and individual goals.

Their annual fundraiser, the Festival of Flavors, will be held October 22, at the Sierra 2 Center in Sacramento.  The Festival of Flavors is an international food experience that also features excellent regional beers and wines.

They are in need of value items (prints) to be sold at the event’s silent auction.  If you wish to learn more or contribute please contact:

High Winds make for tough shoot during Woods Lake Wildflowers Trip

Allen Adler

Mother Nature did not smile on the intrepid group that made a 3:30am departure from OC Lodge.

High Winds and chilly 54 degree temperatures greeted the group of five Club members who made the trip to Woods Lake to photograph wildflowers on July 18th.

Making the trip were Allen Adler, Jeff Andersen, Bob Baikauskas, Pete Henshaw and Marion Randall.

The group pushed onto the meadow making the half-mile hike to the meadow in the early morning light before the sun hit the Eastern ridgeline.

You can check out some of the shots that were made on the trip dispite the high gusty winds.  To view them go to our Archived August Field Trip Page   HERE

A New Location added: Redding's Sundial Bridge

The Sundial Bridge is located in Redding’s Turtle Bay Exploration Park. The structure holds up a pedestrian bridge spanning the Sacramento River. During the day, the sundial actually works for a few mid-day hours. At night, the sundial structure it is nicely lit, and the bridge has a glass flooring which is lit from underneath. To learn more about this location, click  HERE

The locations page is a collection of photography locations from individual member travels, and from past club-organized field trips. It’s goal is to serve as an inspiration to go somewhere and photograph something interesting. It can also help organize future field trips.

We look forward to your contributions. To share a location with others, click the link at the top of the Locations page. To go to our Locations page click  HERE
