Membership Open Forum and Presentation of Slick New Image Processing Software
April 13th General Meeting Showcased Two Topics

The General Meeting on Apr 13 covered two subjects.

First, Jim Moon mesmerized his audience with a presentation on PhotoLemur (automatic photo enhancement software.) Judging from the enthusiastic comments offered by the members, subscriptions to PhotoLemur jumped following Jim's demonstration. Please note, PhotoLemur is available for the Apple PCs and Windows 10 only.

The second half of the meeting featured the Club's first ever Open Forum. Members  were given the chance to discuss a range of topics related to enhancing the Club and enriching the membership experience.  In an all-out-effort to capture each and every comment, the forum was video recorded and copious notes were taken. The board will review the results and follow through with the Club members at a future General Meeting.

The May 10th General Meeting will Feature Professor Rebecca Gregg
Love and Photography will be the topic of her presentation.

Rebecca Gregg considers herself part of a dying breed; a photography professor that does not have a degree in photographic arts. She retired from the Sierra College Photography and Applied Art and Design Departments in 2016. She is a Charter Member of Viewpoint Photographic Art Center in Sacramento, and serves on the Board of Directors and Curatorial Committee.

As a licensed marriage, family and child counselor, Gregg worked for 12 years in the counseling department at Sierra Collage helping shape the future of her students by guiding them to follow their hearts. Ultimately, she followed her own heart and passion by transitioning into a career as a photography professor.

Reflecting back on 36 years of teaching photography, Gregg explains, “Going through several decades of work, I was struck at first by the differences, but stepping back I began to see the overarching similarity. I saw the early interest in small images, in working with the square as a compositional challenge and in the reassuring beauty of everyday objects. I have some times worked rather heavy handed pushing the image but most often with little manipulation of what I saw in the moment or afterward in the darkroom or computer.”

Gregg has additionally explored a variety of themes and interests from documentary, nature, still life and travel photography. She will undoubtedly capture our hearts at the May General Meeting when she presents, 'Love and Photography.’

Nomination of Board Members for 2017/18 Starts Now

Each year our club has four elected board member positions to consider.  Our “fiscal year” ends on June 30 and our process to consider the four positions starts in April and elections are held in June during our monthly general meeting.

Names under consideration for board positions will be announced at the May General Meeting and additional names may be submitted for consideration after that meeting.

For this year, the board has appointed Les Thomas to be the Chair of the Nominating Committee and he will be joined by Jeff Andersen and Pete Henshaw.

For our fiscal year beginning July 1, 2017, current board members Truman Holtzclaw, Vice President, and Dale Petersen, Treasurer have agreed to continue.  Brad Senn has announced he will be ending his term as President and Debra Raach has noted she will not continue in her role of Secretary beyond June 30, 2017.

A Heartfelt "Thank You" from Les and Marilyn Thomas

As many of you know those who have attended the many longer field trips to the Eastern Sierras, Yosemite and Death Valley to name a few; the pre-planning and Show an Tell events are always held at Les, Marilyn and Sniffer's house (Sniffer is their dog).

They have hosted approaching 40 people at these events and have graciously opened their home to us. On many occasions they have fed us a wonderful dinner prepared by Marilyn.

As a small way of saying "thank you", the club board authorized the purchase of a $125 gift certificate to Ruth's Chris Steakhouse along with a bouquet of flowers.

Debra Raach took the lead in making all of this happen and Brad and Debra delivered the thank you on April 20.  It seemed only fitting that since they had fed us so many times that the club should treat them to a special dinner for just the two of them.

Brad  received this heart felt note from them and wanted to share it with the club.

Photography Club Once Again Exhibits in the Needle Arts Display Case

"Tranquility"

The Photography Club has taken over the Needle Arts display window in the Orchard Creek Lodge once again from May 10 to June 12.  The display is located across from the Multipurpose Room (where our SIGs are held).  Every year we have the opportunity to show the “world” what we can do with the printed form of photography.  Jeff Andersen is the organizer for this event and this year he elected to concentrate on Faces.  If the 'eyes are the window to the soul,' the 'face is the image of the heart'.

Whether it is a face that forms the foundation of your world

"Kyle"

or one that passed through your life in the click of a shutter, capturing the essence of that face is critical.  Many of us don’t really concentrate on this area so it was a real challenge.  As you will see when you visit the display, our photographers met that challenge and have produced some wonderful images.  To date the following have submitted images; Jim Cormier, De Cahill, Bob Dale, Becky Davis , Camille Grabowski, Betsy Hanner, Jeff Hanner, Pete Henshaw, Truman Holtzclaw, Carole Haskell, Klara Kleman, Diane Margetts, Joe Mello, Carol Percy, Dale Petersen, Charlie Schuman, Brad Senn, Ken Silverman, Bill Szabo, Larry White.

You Asked for It and Now You Have a Chance at It
Opportunity to Tour the Gladding, McBean Plant

Thanks to our own John Neil we have a rare opportunity to tour the Gladding, McBean Factory on May 22.

This factory started in 1875 making clay sewer pipe and evolved into a major manufacturer of architectural terra-cotta used on buildings throughout the United States.  It is still operating today making sewer pipe and  architectural ornamentation for buildings.

We will be given a private tour by Joe Parker (Sales Manager at Gladding, McBean) consisting of only seven lucky individuals from our club.  The tour will begin at 8 am starting at the sales office.  Assuming there will be a lot of interest in this field trip, and in order to make it as fair as possible,  The Board elected to select the seven spots using a raffle system.

At the General Meeting in May we will have raffle tickets available at the check-in desk for those interested in going.  Fill out the appropriate half and drop it in the raffle can.  We will draw the winners and a couple of alternates during the meeting. Must be present to win. GOOD LUCK!

New Projector and Screen Along With New Video Production Capability Bring About Dramatic Improvements in Kilaga Springs Presentation Hall

A new rear projection system has been installed in Kilaga Springs which consists of a 150 inch diagonal screen with a 16x9 aspect ratio that is 167% larger than the old screen.  The material for the new screen transmits twice as much light through it, making the image you see much, much brighter.

Our new DLP (Digital Light Processing) projector is equally or more stunning with twice the video resolution and is 2.5 times brighter than our old projector.  The new one uses a laser light source that will last approximately 20,000 hours without degradation in its brightness or color purity during that lifetime.  If you would like to learn more about this system click the PDF file below.

Kilaga Springs Presentation Hall with New Equipment

In addition to the projection system, on 2/9/17 a new video recording system was installed at the Kilaga Springs Presentation Hall.  The purpose of this system is to record presentations, performances, SCLHCA meetings and other events held at the KSPH.  Operators are now being trained to use this equipment and switch between three HD cameras and a presentation from the podium.  In addition, the equipment used can provide picture in picture so that the presenter and the presentation can be seen at the same time.

This system also has the capability of sending the camera's output back to the TVs and Center screen.  Clubs are beginning to record their presentations and post them for viewing by their membership. This is a great asset to our association.  If you would like to be an operator of this system contact Jeff Hanner to sign up for training. (by Jeff Hanner)

Loon Lake Galaxy Photo Opportunity Highlights Summer Field Trips

Photo by Dale Petersen - The photo was taken at Loon Lake last July when an intrepid group of Club members ventured to the Lake in a first-time effort. To read about their success and review their planning documents visit the archived trip report available on the Field Trip page.

This Summer will offer two great opportunities to photograph the Milky Way Galaxy over Loon Lake.  The first opportunity will take place on the nights of  July 24, 25, 26.  The second opportunity will take place on the nights of August 21, 22, 23.

During those time periods the moon will not have any impact on night sky brightness and the Galactic Core (brightest part)  will be visible at a reasonable hour... not 4:00am.  In July it will be visible to photograph starting at 10:09 PM and in August it will be visible starting at 9:23PM.

During both times the window of opportunity to photograph will be about two and a half hours.

Specific information regarding the photo opportunity (maps, compass bearings, camping information etc.) is posted on the Field Trip page  HERE

Other Planned Trips

Below is a listing of upcoming planned Field Trips. For those who are newer to the club, our field trips go far beyond just going on a "photo shoot".  They are planned to be memorable "Adventures".

You are allowed to bring guests on these field trips unless it is specifically limited to a certain number of "spots".  For those trips where we are traveling overnight we normally have a "Pre-Trip Planning Party" with loads of information, handouts and helpful tips.  We also have after-trip Show & Tell parties to share photos from the Adventure.

We are always looking for new ideas, so if you bring an idea, please bring a willingness to help do research & planning.

Tahoe Wildflower and Waterfalls - Late June early July (dates to be determined)

July is the time for wildflowers in the Sierras and the Lake Tahoe area offers abundant opportunities to get some beautiful shots.  With the heavy snows this winter, the streams and riviers will be running at maximum capacity.  One of the favorite areas to photography includes the area near Taylor Creek and Falling Leaf Lake.  The parking lot that overlooks the Emerald Bay also provides an excellent opportunity to get a beautiful sunrise over the Lake.

July & August - Loon Lake Galaxy Shoot - July 24, 25, 26 & August 21, 22, 23

The time period between July 19th and July 20th will offer an excellent opportunity to photograph the Milky Way Galaxy from the North Shore of Loon Lake.  Five members of the Club made the trip last year and you can get the details of their trip along with a Gallery of images by visiting the August Field Trip page   HERE     You can also get detailed information about this year's trip by going to the Field Trip page where it is posted on the current Field Trip Page.

September

In September we are planning on a return to the Reno Hot Air Balloon festival which features over 100 hot air balloons.

Photo Flash Mobs - Anytime the light is right!

Flash Mob Trips are those spontaneous happenings usually in the local area.  Notices for these trips are sent to you via email on somewhat short notice.  They are fun and you will always learn something new.  Examples in the past have been some night photography learning opportunities such as shooting the Super Moon and photographing the city lights in Old Sacramento.
