Fall Colors Just Starting in Tahoe and Hope Valley-Taylor Creek Getting Ready for the Salmon Run

As of September 25 the Fall colors were just starting to appear in the Tahoe Basin and Hope Valley. The autumn colors were still pretty scarce around Tahoe but Hope Valley was starting to show clusters of the yellow aspen leaves around Sorenson’s Resort and along the West Fork of the Carson River in that same general area.
A quick hike along Taylor Creek at the USFS Visitor Center showed that the creek is running well indicating water was being released from the dam at Fallen Leaf Lake. One might ask why this matters and the answer has to do with the Kokanee Salmon run that can not start until there is sufficient flow to let the salmon swim upstream. No salmon were observed at the time but the creek is ready. A hike to the dam confirmed that one gate had indeed been opened.
So if your goal is to shoot fall colors and capture the salmon run complete with the bears fattening up on those same salmon you do not have long to wait.

Eastern Sierra Fall Colors and a mid-October Super-Moon
to be focus of Field Trip slated for October 14th to 19th.
The California Highway 395 Corridor on the Eastern Sierra from Mono Lake to the Alabama Hills will be the focus of the Club’s annual Fall Color Field trip scheduled to take place from October 14th to the 19th.

The Eastern Sierra is California's showcase for Fall Colors and provides photographers with great opportunities to capture beautiful images of yellow, gold, and orange aspens against a backdrop of spectacular mountain peaks, streams and lakes.
In addition to the Fall Colors, the trip is also being scheduled to take advantage of a “Super Moon” that will reach its maximum fullness on the evening of October 15th at precisely 9:23 pm.

A detailed information Package including itinerary and location maps has been prepared to enable participants to plan for the trip and set their own time table based upon their interest.
The package includes information for the primary locations for photographing Fall Color such as Convict Lake, Rock Creek Canyon, Lake Sabrina, and South Lake Road among others.

Rhonda Campbell Wins A First Place in the Art League of Lincoln’s “Word Challenge”

Rhonda Campbell
Tales of
Robin Hood
Rhonda won a first place ribbon in the mixed media category for her art titled “Tales of Robin Hood”, an 18”x24” mixed media piece. Although this art piece did not use her photographic skills it did exemplify her other artistic talents.
Her entry in the mixed media category used an encaustic with paint, ink and textures. An encaustic is a hot wax medium used by ancient Greeks and Egyptians. She used the medium to embed objects as well as paint with it. Oil paint can also be mixed in the wax or it can be painted over encaustic itself. Pan Pastels and other paints that are oil based were also used to create the final affect.
Rhonda explains the piece itself as “representing the tales of Robin Hood. From the torn pages of said book, came pouring out the words and tales of Robin Hood. I had never read the book and quickly learned there are many tales and adventures in the one book.” Congratulations to Rhonda for this award!

Their annual fundraiser, the Festival of Flavors, will be held October 22, at the Sierra 2 Center in Sacramento. The Festival of Flavors is an international food experience that also features excellent regional beers and wines.

The BLOG is Here!!! Check it Out.
The Blog has been up for a couple of months now and and there are currently seven posts. The topics include dealing with lens distortion and perspective issues, why you should use back button auto focus, good deals available on the internet, and one on Raw Therapee a free and very capable photo editor that will take your photos from blah to great in less than a minute. So if you haven't checked them out yet there is no time like the present to click on the link below.
It's been about a month since the last Blog and my excuse is I was on a two week trip to the Pacific Northwest which will be the subject of an upcoming Blog post. Plus I'm working on a couple of others so they should be coming more frequently.

We want to hear from You!
One of the nice things about the Blog is you have the ability to comment on blog posts and respond to someone else's comments. You can even put a photo in your comment. So far no one has commented on any of the posts. We were hoping members would get involved and express there opinions. In fact we encourage you to do so.
If you have any experience with, or opinions about, any of the information presented in the blog posts please share your thoughts with your fellow Club members. Post a comment. I would prefer the Blog be a conversation and not a lecture.

Have a post idea... Let us know.
One final reminder. Any member can make a Blog post. Just write it up and send it to me. You can even remain anonymous however you do have to tell me who you are but I won't use your name as the author.

A New Location Added: Lassen Volcanic National Park

We arrived at Lassen Park late in the season, on August 14th, and were surprised to find so many wildflower varieties in bloom – early season lupines at over 8,100 feet and many late-season bloomers at the lower elevations.

The south entrance of Lassen Park is between 140 and 160 miles from SCLH, depending on your route. We took Routes 65, 70, 149, 99, 36 and 89, because this way had fewer winding roads.

For more details about our trip, a listing of wildflowers, a park map and a short photo gallery, click HERE

The Locations page is a collection of photography locations from individual member travels, and from past club-organized field trips. It’s goal is to serve as an inspiration to go somewhere and photograph something interesting. It can also help organize future field trips.

We look forward to your contributions. To share a location with others, click the link at the top of the Locations page. To go to our Locations page click HERE
