April Online Enhancement SIG to feature three new Photo Challenge Images.

The idea of the challenge is to take a look at how different people interpret

and apply their personal touch to the same image.

During this time where we are all practicing good Social Distancing behavior, the Photo Club is looking for ways to keep our members engaged, inspired and working on our craft.  The Enhancement SIG is working on moving programs, presentations and the monthly Photo Challenge to an online interactive platform.

Kate McCarthy, Enhancement SIG Coordinator, is researching video conferencing applications that will allow members to participate in the Photo Challenge, in real-time, with other members to showcase how they interpret and process the Photo Challenge Images.

If we are successful in getting a platform that can support this kind of real-time interaction Kate will send an announcement/invitation to participate via email.

In the meantime please feel free to download the challenge images and do your creative best and have fun with them.  (See download instructions below.)

To participate in the challenge, members need to download the high quality image files from the Photo Challenge Page and work their magic.

There are no rules other than you must still be able to recognize the enhanced photo as being derived from the original photo. You can turn it into a work of art such as a painting, a sketch, a cartoon, an abstract, or you can just make into a better photo. It's up to you.

Feel free to let your creativity and imagination run wild, or show off your skills at creating a great photo using your favorite post processing software.

Here are the Images from February Sig Composition Challenge in case you missed it!

Since we are all "stranded at home" here's another chance to fight off boredom.  Download the images and build a new one using the images below.  Well review your work in our Online Sig or when we meet again in person.

We changed things up for the Photo Challenge this past February. We challenged our members to create a composited "Moon Set" photo.  So for those of you who missed it here is your chance to try your hand a "building" and image using compositing techniques.

The subject will be the moon setting in the early morning over Lone Pine Mountain or Mount Whitney situated just West of I-395 and the Alabama Hills in the Eastern Sierra.

The final image should be a "Composite" created using the following four images.

2002-Lone_Pine_Mt-Esig_Challenge_sm-Feb6
Lone Pine Mountain
2002-Pink_Clouds-Esig_Challenge_sm-Feb10

Click on the above photos to go to Photo Challenge Page and the Hi-Rez Challenge images to download & process.

To participate in the challenge, download the high quality image files from the Photo Challenge Page.  Click on the photos above to go to the page.

There are no rules other than you must still be able to recognize the photo as being derived from the original Lone Pine Mountain photo. You can substitute your own sky/clouds, moon or stars.  Once composited you can turn it into a work of art such as a painting, sketch, cartoon, or abstract. It's up to you.

If you are using Photoshop you might want to try using the "Blend If" option which can be accessed from the top Menu by clicking on:  Layers > Layers Style > Blending Options > Then use the Blend If controls.

Robert Thomas who runs www.photoblogstop.com has an outstanding description on how to use the luminosity blending mode to add a moon (or stars) to an image.

Enhancement SIG meets 1st Wednesday in Orchard Creek Lodge Multi-purpose Room at 8:30 AM

The Enhancement SIG will be coordinated by Kate McCarthy.  The formats will include incorporating Photo Challenges, monthly review and critique (if requested) of members' work, and discussion of the various methods and programs for photo editing.

If members would like specific presentations on software and/or process, please let Kate know. We will look for members who can provide some experience in this area to lead that particular SIG. Our photo club has a wealth of experience and expertise, so the success of the Enhancement SIG will be a community effort.

SCLH Photography Club Facebook Page

This is a place for SCLH Photography Members to have a conversation about photography, cameras, and places to shoot photography in the area. You can ask a specific "how to" or "where can I find..." or "how can I improve this shot?" or "thinking of going to.....does anyone want to come too?" You can post great photography-related websites that others might like. Use your creativity.  The SCLH Photography Facebook page is restricted to the Club membership only.

There are a few rules.

  1. No politics, none, nada.

  2. The only things you can sell on this page are photography equipment that is usually sold within the club like reselling cameras, printers, etc. Nothing else. Nothing.

  3. Constructive criticism only when critiquing. (Don't tell us that it was a stupid, boring shot, We'll figure it out anyway.)

  4. If you are selling your photography, protect your copyright. You may not want that one up on the Internet on Facebook. Post a link to your photography website instead.

Volunteers Needed for Video Production

The Association’s Video Services Group (“VSG”), a sub-group within the Communications and Community Relations Committee, is seeking volunteers to assist with producing a variety of different types of video pieces.  These videos are almost all intended for posting to our Association’s YouTube channel to be viewed by residents.

VSG is particularly interested in hearing from residents who have experience in all aspects of video creation.  We want to hear from YOU if you would like to become involved with the planning, directing, camera operating, video editing, audio engineering, and/or assisting more experienced members of the group.  If any of the foregoing piques your interest, please contact Peter Beckett via e-mail at videography@sclhca.com.
