They will then talk about what the LPG is, giving a brief history of how and why the group was formed.  They will discuss the many events the LPG has covered in the Lincoln Hills Sun City community and how the donations made for our volunteer services go right back into the community by way of monetary contributions made to the Lincoln Hills Foundation on behalf of the LPG.

The duo will walk you through how the Event Photography Request Form process works from start to finish and how they ultimately provide the client with the highest quality photos possible of their event that will help tell a story.

Pace Race... a Major Production

Charlie will then discuss what went into the planning and photographing of the Lincoln Pace Race which was the biggest photo shoot the LPG has covered thus far.

The discussion will wrap up with a Hi-Def Blu-ray presentation that was custom produced for the client to capture the essence and impact of the event. This Blu-ray presentation will be used to recruit sponsorship for next year’s 2nd Annual Pace Race.

If you are a photographer regardless of your skill level and would like to find out more about the LPG and how to become part of it, come to the October General meeting.

Fall Colors, Salmon Runs and Bears on the docket for October Field Trip
South Lake Tahoe, Hope Valley, and Taylor Creek will be the destinations for October 17, 18, & 19.

Photography Club Fall Color Field Trip will target the South Lake Tahoe and Hope Valley areas on October 17, 18 and 19.

The aspens, cottonwoods, willows and mountain maples can provide fantastic displays of gold, yellow and smatterings of red against spectacular mountain and lake backgrounds.

We also will be visiting the creeks to see the Kokanee salmon spawn and hopefully get photos of bears feeding on the salmon as the bears prepare for their winter hibernation.  Additionally there will be plenty of mergansers, gulls and other birds feeding on the salmon.

There will also be an opportunity to capture a beautiful Sunrise Shot over Lake Tahoe’s Emerald Bay.

The Seven Year Road to a Magazine Cover Photo
Sande Parker "Your Table Is Waiting" Image Selected for California Quarterly Cover

By Sande Parker

In 2010, after shooting the Palouse, in Eastern Oregon, with Truman and Sandy Holtzclaw, Ron and I headed east to photograph ghost towns in Montana.  When Ron said he had to shoot ‘just one more ghost town’, I asked to be dropped off in Philipsburg, Montana. With my Panasonic Lumix and a book, I stopped into the Perfect Grind for a pastry and hot chocolate.

With no other customers, and my fascination with the colorful wooden chairs, while I waited for my order, I rearranged the furniture and took a series of photos, just for the fun of it.

In 2013, while publishing my travel stories with photos, for 19 weeks, in the Lincoln News Messenger, I started taking a poetry class in Lincoln, with Sue Clark. During this time, another student, David Anderson, had a poem published in a magazine called the California Quarterly. This juried magazine accepts poems from around the world. Although, the poems published were not my ‘style of writing’, Sue suggested I submit my photos, as possible covers for the magazine.

After looking up the publishing details on the California Quarterly website, I followed the instructions and emailed a few photos, sized to their specifications, to the magazine. A few days later, I received a thank you email, indicating my photos would be added to the thousands of other paintings, and photos waiting selection.

For the first year, I kept checking the website, and then, only periodically remembered submitting them.

It’s interesting how life brings you good news to offset your worries, just when you need it. In early July 2017, the day we heard Ron had to have major surgery, I received an email, saying one of my photos had been accepted for the cover of the Fall 2017 issue of the California Quarterly. They asked for a larger size file, which I promptly sent off.

The day in late August, when I brought Ron home from the hospital, the copy of the California Quarterly, with my photo on the front, arrived.  My ‘fee’ for this honor, was one copy of the California Quarterly. I had pre-ordered ten copies. When my 10 copies arrived, they had sent me an additional 5. Plenty to share.

If you are like me, the ultimate dream, as an amateur photographer, is to have your photo on the cover of a magazine. Although I create slideshows, calendars and notecards with my photos, the ultimate, for me, was a cover on a magazine.

“California Quarterly” is the official publication of the California State Poetry Society. Although located in California, the Quarterly accepts original, unpublished poems from all over the United States and abroad. It first began publication in 1972. There are both monthly and annual contests.

Additionally, the Quarterly welcomes submissions of unpublished original art for its covers. The cover art selected for the Fall 2017 edition of the Quarterly was Sande Parker’s colorful image entitled “Your Table is Waiting.”

Allen Adler shares his Lightroom Processing Methods
at September Enhancement SIG
Allen presented "live" image processing of images with Lightroom demonstrating his key steps.

A highlight of the September Enhancement SIG was a presentation and demonstration by Allen Adler on his basic image processing methods using Lightroom.

Allen emphasized that the demonstration was to show his initial processing workflow, and not his complete approach which often will involve further processing in Photoshop.  "These are tips to quick, basic adjustments that will get most images to a good starting point" said Allen.  He added, "Some images might not need more work, but some will.  It all depends on the image and what the photographer is trying to accomplish."

Allen also distributed an Outline his basic steps. You can download the Outline by clicking on the pdf link below.

The meeting also included an introduction of the  Image Processing Interpretive Challenge which is described in the next story.

Allen Adler also an avid fisherman!

Presented below are two of Allen's before & after images "processed" live at the September SIG.

Allen emphasized that the demonstration was designed to provide "basic" steps to get to a good image, while recognizing that further "advanced" processing may be required of some images.

Fire up your creative mojo, take the November Enhancement SIG

Image Processing/Interpretive Challenge.

de gustibus non disputandum est

The November Photo Enhancement SIG will feature the second Photo Processing/Interpretive Challenge.  The challenge will be to download one of three photos from this site and process/enhance it for presentation to the SIG attendees.

The idea is to take a look at how different people interpret,

and put their personal touch to  the same image.

There are no rules other than you must still be able to recognize the enhanced photo as being derived from the original photo. You can turn it into a work of art such as a painting, a sketch, a cartoon, an abstract or you can just make it a better photo. It's up to you. Feel free to let your creativity and imagination run wild or show off your skills at creating a great photo using your favorite post processing software.

We have posted the un-processed (the way they came out of the camera) high-rez 14Mb images (see below) on a separate page so you can download the images to your computer.

To access the page click the link below the photos.

AUDACITY Audio Editing is the topic for the October Video SIG meeting.

MEETING DESCRIPTION:    In this month’s Video SIG I will demonstrate the use of AUDACITY, an audio editing software.  It is available for both MAC and Windows operating systems and can be downloaded for free at www.audacityteam.org.  My preference is to use Adobe Audition with Adobe Premiere Elements, but Audition is expensive, $19/mo singly in the Creative Cloud (CC) or $50.00/mo in CC All Apps. Audacity seems like a good alternative, but I will cover more at the Video SIG.
Using both platforms, we will discuss how Audacity is best used to edit audio, its advantages and limitations.  This should be interesting to those who edit audio that originated with video as well as that which is added separately, such as voiceovers and sound effects.

For more information, you can visit the Video SIG page by clicking  HERE

The Video SIG meets the 3rd Tuesday of the month in the Orchard Creek Lodge Multi-purpose Room at 9:00AM

The latest blog post is on backing up your photos

We all know we should backup our photos but how many of us do and more importantly are we doing it properly? The latest blog post gives my opinions and that of experts on backing up photos as well as other important files and presents links to articles that deal with the subject of backups. It will discuss backup software some which is free and some you have to pay for. It will also list cloud based solutions for backing up your photos and other important files.

You may think you are doing everything right when it comes to backups but are you? Check out this blog post and then you can make an informed decision on whether to keep doing it the way you are doing it or switch to a different and hopefully better way.

The For more information go to the  Blog.

We want to hear from You!

One of the nice things about the Blog is you have the ability to comment on blog posts and respond to someone else's comments. You can even put a photo in your comment.  So far no one has commented on any of the posts. We were hoping members would get involved and express there opinions.  In fact we encourage you to do so.

If you have any experience with, or opinions about, any of the information presented in the blog posts please share your thoughts with your fellow Club members. Post a comment. I would prefer the Blog be a conversation and not a lecture.

Have a post idea... Let us know.

One final reminder. Any member can make a Blog post. Just write it up and send it to me. You can even remain anonymous however you do have to tell me who you are but I won't use your name as the author.
