Elements of the “WOW FACTOR”

Truman Holtzclaw will Explain the Elements of Great Photography at the September General Meeting

Let’s explore the many elements that go into making a “WOW” image.  These elements include, but are not limited to: Lighting, Composition, Colors, Emotions, Subject Matter, Equipment, Environment, Experience, Opportunity, Planning and Luck. We will look at many photographic examples illustrating these elements.  Most of these elements are easily accessible to photographers. We just need to be aware of these elements and use them to make our own WOW images.  This program will include music, live narration and over 400 images, many of which have been contributed by our own members.  After this presentation you will be given a list of easy challenges, to take with you, that are “Elements of the Wow Factor”.

Bob Baikauskas awarded Best of Show at current Art League of Lincoln Member's Show

The winning image is a sunset landscape taken in the Hope Valley

Bob was the recipient of the "Best of Show" award for his photo "Hope Valley Sunset" taken near Picket's Junction where CA 89 and CA 88 meet.  The area is a favorite for many Club members who venture there to photograph the Fall Colors and the Galaxy over the Carson River.

The Show featured the work of more than 20 Artist and showcased 40-plus pieces of original art including paintings, sculptures, three-dimensional, photographs and digital art among other.  The awards were presented on Thursday, September 5th at a Thursday evening reception that saw over 100 guests.

The winning photo was taken in the Fall of 2017 and was originally planned to be a shot of the Galaxy over the Carson.  Clouds rolled in and obscured any chance of getting the Galaxy shot so a change in camera position was called for and the resultant image was made of the setting sun lighting up the valley.

October 2nd Enhancement SIG marks return of popular Photo Challenge

The idea of the challenge is to take a look at how different people interpret

and apply their personal touch to the same image.

To participate in the challenge, members need to download the high quality image files from the Photo Challenge Page and work their magic.

There are no rules other than you must still be able to recognize the enhanced photo as being derived from the original photo. You can turn it into a work of art such as a painting, a sketch, a cartoon, an abstract, or you can just make into a better photo. It's up to you.

Feel free to let your creativity and imagination run wild, or show off your skills at creating a great photo using your favorite post processing software.

The Enhancement SIG will be coordinated by Kate McCarthy.  The formats will include incorporating Photo Challenges, monthly review and critique (if requested) of members' work, and discussion of the various methods and programs for photo editing.

If members would like specific presentations on software and/or process, please let Kate know. We will look for members who can provide some experience in this area to lead that particular SIG. Our photo club has a wealth of experience and expertise, so the success of the Enhancement SIG will be a community effort.

Milky Way Galaxy from Caples Lake

A small LHPC group lined up near the shore on Caples Lake early evening July 30 for Milky Way Galaxy photography. As darkness fell, the bugs got cold and stopped biting, and Jupiter and then Saturn became visible in the southern sky. Finally, the Milky Way became brighter and photography started.

The photo on the left was taken at 22:35 – a 13 second exposure, f/3.5, ISO 3200. Ten frames were captured sequentially and then 3 dark (lens covered) frames. These 13 frames were processed by DeepSkyStacker (a Windows freeware program), which reduced noise and pixel artifacts.

One more month remains this year for Galaxy-center photos. At the end of August around the time of the new moon the galaxy center should be visible early evening.

SCLH Photography Club Facebook Page

This is a place for SCLH Photography Members to have a conversation about photography, cameras, and places to shoot photography in the area. You can ask a specific "how to" or "where can I find..." or "how can I improve this shot?" or "thinking of going to.....does anyone want to come too?" You can post great photography-related websites that others might like. Use your creativity.  The SCLH Photography Facebook page is restricted to the Club membership only.

There are a few rules.

  1. No politics, none, nada.

  2. The only things you can sell on this page are photography equipment that is usually sold within the club like reselling cameras, printers, etc. Nothing else. Nothing.

  3. Constructive criticism only when critiquing. (Don't tell us that it was a stupid, boring shot, We'll figure it out anyway.)

  4. If you are selling your photography, protect your copyright. You may not want that one up on the Internet on Facebook. Post a link to your photography website instead.

VSG is particularly interested in hearing from residents who have experience in all aspects of video creation.  We want to hear from YOU if you would like to become involved with the planning, directing, camera operating, video editing, audio engineering, and/or assisting more experienced members of the group.  If any of the foregoing piques your interest, please contact Peter Beckett via e-mail at videography@sclhca.com.
